Nathan Milot

I am a software engineer at Google working to help optimize cloud storage efficiency.

I am passionate about improving systems, personal privacy, and user control over their data. Outside of software engineering, I love to go camping, backpacking, and kayaking with my wife and our dogs. I also enjoy building things and have been getting into woodworking. In my free time I like to disconnect from tech and spend time with family and in the real world.

Experience

I am a Software Engineer at Google, and have been since June 2021. I am working in Google Cloud Storage to improve storage efficiency. I currently work from the Durham North Carolina office.

I was a Software Engineer at Amazon from June 2019 to June 2021. While there I worked on a variety of projects in Elastic Block store. My main focus during my tenure was on GDPR compliance for EBS. I enjoyed having an impact on huge amounts of data and ensuring users data privacy met the highest standards.

SWE Intern summer 2017 and 2018. Worked on an internal team that supported the sales teams in 2017. In 2018 I worked on Search Platforms to help with adopting new systems by automating code conversion.

Projects

This website

While I have had other personal portfolio websites, previous iterations w5ere built off of some kind of template. As a challenge, I wanted to build this website from the ground up. It has been an fun challenge as all of my professional work has been developing backends of large scale systems. My goal was to have a clean, modern, mobile-first website and learn more about frontend development.

Query

My senior project in college was a web app called Query. The goal behind this project was to make it easier to ask questions in large audiences, both in person and live streams. It did this via a reddit style voting system that participants could upvote or downvote other users submissions and post their own questions. Presenters could moderate questions themselves or give admin roles to others, and respond to them live or in the app.
